From December, the 9th to December, the 24th the participants of the PolidEU project worked on the last module, Module 8 «Modern challenges related to language and identity» (Defis et enjeux actuels liés à l’identité et à la langue).

The work on the module was organized in the form of a discussions based on authentic documents and video materials of the French press on topical issues related to identity.

While watching and reading, students performed a number of tasks on listening and reading comprehension and a preliminary discussion. As their homework they prepared to critical discussion on subjects treated in the documents. All the tasks had been developed by the PolidEU project work group for the implementation of the module.

As part of the module the following issues were discussed:

  1. The EU symbols as means of fostering the European identity (for instance, Europeman).

  2. Do national symbols delay fostering the European identity? (for instance, the day Britain as the symbol of unity of the nation after the terrorist attacks in London).

  3. The radicalisation of EU citizens as a result of lack of assimilation and lack of European identity (for instance, terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels).
